7 Healthy Snacks You Can Find in the Supermarket

Posted by Nick Sheridan on

Snack attack got you good? You’re not alone! Here at 99th Monkey, we’re all about #shnacks. Long gone are the days where you need to spend hours making your own healthy snacks for the week, jumping from health food shop to organic market to find all your natural, wholefood snack goodness (that actually tastes good). If you haven’t heard the news yet - firstly, where have you been? Secondly, take a seat, get comfy and grab some snacks (essential) and read on!

Since our nut butters are now available in Coles, we've naturally been stocking up on all our snacks at our local Coles Supermarkets. So, we know a thing or two about where to find all the best snacks (and peanut butter) in the aisle! There can also be a lot of confusion surrounding snacks. What is considered ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for you and with so many options on the market, it can get overwhelming. Even with so many healthier snack options than ever before, there are many that are just trying to look the part but are hiding extra fat, added sugars and other unwanted ingredients. When choosing snacks, we’ve found keeping it simple and easy is the way to go. With all this in mind we’ve put together a list of our 10 healthy snacks you can find in the supermarket to keep you snack happy all week round. From salty, to sweet, to the best nut butter in town we’ve got you covered.

Fruit

We’re starting with the easiest and maybe most obvious grab and go supermarket snack (but with good reason!) Fruit has, at times, not gotten the credit it deserves. Mainly surrounding the fact that it does contain sugar. However, these are naturally occuring sugars and not added sugars (which is the ones we need to look out for, especially when it comes to snack foods). Naturally occurring sugar in fruit is considered small in the big picture and also comes with the water (hello hydration) and fibre (hello gut health) of the fruit. Not to mention fruits are packed full of essential vitamins and antioxidants that help us keep our body healthy. Pair it with a spoon or two of any 99th monkey nut butter and you’ve got a delicious, nutritious, filling snack!

Vegetables

Probably the second easiest and most obvious supermarket snack! Hear us out, vegetables make a GREAT snack, especially if  you’re someone that likes to nibble and pick through the day. Vegetable snacks are high in fibre, vitamins, minerals and other goodies. When they’re paired with the right sides, they’re also super filling and nutritious. Our favourites are fresh cucumber, carrot, celery sticks and sugar snap peas! We are currently obsessed with dipping/slathering/bathing (whatever you want to call it) celery sticks in our 99th monkey Salted Natural Peanut Butter.

Nut Butters

Hello, hello to our favourite snack of all! (Did you expect anything less from us?) We truly can’t live without this one. Gone are the days where peanut butter was the only main option in grocery aisles, commonly also loaded with other unwanted ingredients. Since then, many alternatives have arrived and we’re pretty stoked about it. The different spread of nut butters offer just as much nutritional variety as well as they do flavour variety. There has been and still is a lot of discussion around peanut butter and whether it is actually good for you. A great nut butter should be delicious, clean in ingredients (simple and minimal is best) and versatile. Full of protein, healthy fats and fibre to get you through the day and make that snack oh so much more satisfying and delicious.

We love to use our 99th monkey range in our morning oatmeal, dishes, salad dressing and so much more but honestly, the sky is the limit. For a snack we love to spread our new Almond Cacao Butter over a good piece of sourdough toast, our Natural Almond Butter pairs perfectly with a fresh sliced apple and our current snack when we’re feeling something a little more filling is our Pistachio & Almond Butter layered over a protein bar. If we’re being honest with you too, it’s not rare for us to also just dig in with a spoon!

Hummus

Because who doesn’t love hummus? Delicious, rich and creamy it can be used in a variety of ways. There are a lot of hummus brands available in the fridge section. Make sure you check for minimal ingredients (the mains one being chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, salt and pepper etc). Not only does hummus taste great, but it also comes with an impressive list of benefits. Full of plant-based protein, vitamins and minerals we love to pair ours with carrot and celery sticks to make a tasty, filling snack.

Protein Bars

Protein bars can be one of the best grab-and-go snacks when you’re on the run. However, protein bars and snack bars in general can be notorious for being packed with hidden added sugars, fat and less than desirable ingredients. When choosing protein bars, reading the ingredients list is key to choosing the right one for you. Head into the health food aisle, or some can also be found in the sports section for the best chance of finding your perfect bar. As well as the ingredient list, added protein is always a winner - an important factor in your snack choice because it increases the feeling of fullness! Our current favourite is the Body Science Clean Bars, perfectly portioned to combine fruit, nuts, seeds and plant-based protein.

Nuts and Seeds

Are fantastic snack options! A great source of fibre, protein and healthy fats and super convenient to pack when you’re on the go. You can even create your own trail mix (chopped up protein bar, popcorn, dark chocolate) to keep on hand. Look for unsalted options where possible to keep things simple. Personally, we love our nut butters for our snack options however having a handful of nuts on hand changes things up and creates variety!

Chocolates

That’s right, you heard us! There is nothing better than a piece of dark or natural chocolate with a cup of coffee or tea. Dark chocolate has been linked to a variety of health benefits and mood boosting properties! Personally, we’re obsessed with the new Pana Organic Chocolate range! (We have also been known to dip it in our new Choc Almond 99th monkey Spread).

As you can now see, there are endless amounts of snacks to be found, discovered and devoured right in the convenience of your Coles Supermarket! The best health snacks should be quick and easy to grab-and-go to take with you or when you’re just out and about. Also containing the simplest, most recognisable ingredient list possible. By using our list, we hope that we’ve given you heaps of healthy, delicious and filling snack options! You can mix and match the ingredients to make heaps of combinations as your heart desires.
